Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is the first FDA-approved treatment offering a temporary reduction of moderate to severe crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines. The formula is created from Clostridium botulinum, a natural substance present in lakes, soil, and forests.

In larger concentrations, botulinum toxin is deadly, but the volume used in aesthetic preparations is completely safe. Botox temporarily reduces the ability of targeted facial muscles to contract. That means less pulling and tugging of your skin, and smoother wrinkles and folds.

What is it like to get Botox?

Botox is delivered via several injections, but the process only takes around 10 minutes and is not painful. A very tiny needle delivers the formula, and you’ll only feel a slight pinch.

The practitioners at The Med Spa at Matthews Internal Medicine are highly skilled at placing Botox injections. They know exactly where to administer the injections and exactly how much of the product to use to achieve the desired results.

In general, it takes three injections to treat crow’s feet, five to smooth forehead lines, and five to treat frown lines.

When do the effects of Botox begin and end?

It will take between 24-48 hours for the results to begin, and the full effects won’t be apparent until 3-10 days after your treatment. You can expect diminished lines and folds for up to four months. As time passes, the effects will gradually wear off, and you’ll notice your wrinkles and folds slowly begin to reappear.

At that point, you can decide if you’d like to schedule another treatment. When surveyed, 62% of men and women who’ve had Botox report feeling as though the results were well worth the investment. Best of all, there is evidence to suggest that subsequent treatments can bring even longer lasting results.

Will Botox give me a frozen or stiff look?

When administered by a medical professional with extensive training, Botox will never cause a stiff or frozen appearance. Some talk about the effects of Botox as “paralyzing” your facial muscles. In reality, the formula only partially inhibits muscle movement.

You’ll still be able to express emotions, your skin just won’t be pulled or manipulated into positions where lines and wrinkles deepen. If you’d like to give Botox a try, or if you have any lingering questions, book an appointment at The Med Spa at Matthews Internal Medicine today.
